1.      What is Dragon Boat Day? Explain it in your own words, and list at least five different names to be used for Dragon Boat Day in Chinese characters (5)It is a festival characterized by the consumption of zongzi or traditional Chinese rice pudding, the racing of dragon boats and the remembrance of the great poet Quyuan. This is a festival which was celebrated by people from the ancient times. It has a long history. Festivals were a way to avoid the bad things that happened to occur around the time of the fifth month. People had to be observant and naturally developed this festival. This originates more from the south of China, as it is hotter and has more rice and other cultures. The most important thing is the getting rid of ills aspect.端(duān)午(wǔ)节(jié),端(duān)阳(yáng)节(jié),午(wǔ)日(rì)节(jié),五(wǔ)月(yuè)节(jié)Fifth Month Festival,五(wǔ)日(rì)节(jié)Fifth Day Festival,粽(zòng)子(zǐ)节(jié)Duanwu means ‘begin five’. Duan yang comes from the seasonal conditions such as more sunshine or going to higher places etc. (Duanwu Festival, 2016)

2.      What is the origin of Dragon Boat Day? Explain in English. What is the date for 2016 Dragon Boat Day, and why? Hint: Lunar Calendar. (8) Originally, people in China had more diseases and sickness in summer than in other seasons. The original reason for the celebration was to get rid of the various ills. Four people are commemorated during this festival. Qu Yuan is known as the origin of this celebration. He was a minister for Chu. After having disagreements with the king, he was exiled and wrote poetry. When Chu was defeated, he decided to drown himself in the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth month. The common practices such as the consumption of zongzi, drinking of realgar wine, and the racing of dragon boats came from the actions of the villagers who wanted to save or locate Qu Yuan’s body. The doctor had brought the wine; the fishermen had prepared food for Qu Yuan. People celebrate and rememberhim on the fifth day of the fifth month. He was a patriotic man who deeply cared about the welfare of his country, even when he had been banished. All the activities of Dragon Boat Day are considered to be beneficial for people who are bearing the season. The date for the 2016 Dragon Boat Day is June 9. It is usually observed on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month of the traditional lunar calendar. The lunar calendar is determined solely by the moon.惡(wu)月(yuè)惡(wu)日(rì)is a great phrase/example of how bad people thought of this time during summer. Therefore the date is well positioned on the lunar calendar, but not the Gregorian or lunisolar calendar. (Duanwu Festival, 2016)

3.      Dragon Boat Day is celebrated in many Asian regions;please list 4 countries/regions where people celebrate the festival, and list all the regions/countries where Dragon Boat Day is public holiday in both Chinese characters and English. (2) People celebrate it in mainland China (中(zhōng)国(guó)), Hong Kong(香(xiāng)港(gǎng)), Taiwan(台(tái)湾(wān)) and Macau(澳(ào)门(mén)) as a public holiday. Japan(日(rì)本(běn)), Korea(韩(hán)国(guó)), and Vietnam(越(yuè)南(nán)) have their own equivalent holiday.Singapore(新(xīn)加(jiā)坡(pō)) and Malaysia(马(mǎ)来(lái)西(xī)亚(yà)) can be included, as large Chinese communities there observe this holiday.(Duanwu Festival, 2016)

4.      There are some differences in celebrating the festival; however, Asian people share similar customs in many aspects, please list 5 common customs for Dragon Boat Day in Chinese Characters and explain them clearly in English.(5) The most common are 吃(chī)粽(zòng)子(zi), 划(huá)龍(long)舟(zhōu), 喝(hē)雄(xióng)黃(huáng)酒(jiǔ).Consumption of zongzi is very popular at this time among the Chinese because it is warmer, and the food will not become frozen. It is a convenient food which is eaten at normal temperature. Rice is very important for them. Zongzi includes a few other things in the rice so that people can enjoy it more. Through the competition in the boat races, people can row quickly and send away/get rid of the ills and evils. The boat is decorated well in order to support the chasing away of the bad things. Realgar wine is drunk because of tradition. Fermented cereals and powdered realgar are the major components. It is considered an antidote for all poisons, and effective for killing insects and driving away evil spirits. It was used when people in the past visited mountains. There is also a story telling of a person who drank this wine and turned back into a snake. Perfume Pouches戴(dài)香(xiāng)包(bāo)- little bags made with colourful silk cloth. The bags are filled with perfumes or herbal medicines. During the Dragon Boat Festival, these are hung around people’s necks or tied to the front of a garment. In the past, money, various powders, and other things were placed in the pouches. People of different age groups have different shapes and patterns made with the five-coloured strings. It keeps away the evil. Return of a married daughter躲(duǒ)端(duān)午(wǔ) is to avoid the bad things/forbidden things. Besides, the married daughter should/ and will enjoy spending their time with their own family. And, it is the perfect excuse for getting away from the man’s family for a while. Nowadays there is less observance of this tradition but it is still relevant.Cleaning is also performed and plants are hung on doors as well. (Annie Wu, 2016)
