Introduction

 

·        Give a context – macro sentences about the topic

·        Make the argument or contention clear

·        Identify the 3-4 discussion points you will use to explain and defend your argument

Present tense

 

Third Person

 

Focus on nouns and verbs

 

Sequenced discussion e.g.

 

  • Then
  • Having established characters
  • Most effectively
  • Finally

 

Explanation connectives e.g.

·         Because

·         The effect of the author’s use of the metaphor is

·         As a result

·         This is effective because

 

Literary and content based persuasive strategies e.g.

 

Literary based strategies e.g.:

·         Imagery

·         Rhetorical questions

·         Emotive language

·         Inclusive language

·         Repetition

·         Effective titles

·         Structure – repetition, introduction and conclusion

Content based persuasive strategies e.g.:

·         Scenarios/case studies

·         Expert opinion

·         Statistics

Middle

 

·        3-4 paragraphs

·        Structure of paragraphs –  write a topic sentence which makes one point

·        The topic sentence uses or repeats words from your argument

·        Use evidence and language techniques to defend and explain the point you are making.

·        Summary sentence (no hanging quotes)

Conclusion

 

·        Summary of main points and argument
