Facts

·         Food scraps are to be placed into the container for best results

·         They are hermaphrodites

·         A worm can eat its own weight in food every day

·         Worms breedevery 7–10 days and can double theirpopulation in 90 days

·         Feed it fruit and vegie scraps, teabags and coffee grounds,crushed eggshells, small amounts of bread orpasta, moist cardboard and newspaper.

·         Are made almost entirely ofwater and breathe through their skins.

·         Don’t feed it onion, garlic, chilli, dairy, citrus fruit, meat and bones, fish, oils or grease and faeces. Some of these make it acidic or smelly.

·         Earthworms breathe through their skin,have a circulatory system, and calciferous glandsfor neutralizing and digesting food

·         They prefer a neutral environment-adding garden lime helps. They turn organic matter into vermicast, a type of humus.

·         It has the organs of both a male and afemale which allows it to reproduce onits own, a crop and gizzard with coarsesand matter to aid in grinding food.

·         Worm castings contain nitrogen,phosphorus and other plant nutrientsin a rich natural organic fertiliser whichimproves soil structure and drainage.

 

·         Compost earthworms (tiger worms, red wrigglersand Indian blues) should be used, instead of ordinary garden earthworm
