Electrical Power Demand

The percentage of the total amount. Megawatts (100% means 10 000 megawatts.)The maximum winter demand is the total.

The peak (maximum) demand occurs at around 6 pm in
winter.

The demand peak in the morning in winter occurs at
around 8-10 pm

The shape of the winter graph in terms of use of
electricity over 24 hours shows the electrical demand very well. The lowest
demand is around the early morning hours followed by the demand peak of the
morning. The demand then lowers around 10%. The demand rises sharply as soon as
the sun sets. The peak lowers as people begin to sleep.

The demand for electricity is greater in winter than
in summer as: Extra hot water is used for warm baths and showers on cold days.
Shorter days and longer nights mean that lightsstay on longer both insideand
out. Most heating systems use electricity. School-aged or college students stay
at home for winter breaks all day long.

The minimum demand on that day would be 4000
megawatts.

Electricity is sent to factories, houses and other
places regardless of usage. Perhaps a bit less than half the peak demand is the
closest amount to the actual lowest demand.

The mornings and the evenings of winter are when most
people are at their own houses. The demand in summer is stable throughout the
day as there is no need for many of the appliances used in winter.

The night rate electricity tariff is about half the
normal rate because more people use electricity at night than in the day.

Electricity is usually stored in energy storage units
in order to meet the changing demand. The changing demand can be met by
educating people to use less energy during peak hours, or to move the time of
energy use of large appliances to off-peak times such as night time and
weekends.
