Education Gangnam Style

Education Gangnam Style

1.Give some examples of the pressures placed on young people in Korea:

Students need to be beautiful. They must get the required mark in the College Scholastic Ability Test to enter the best universities. They mustfocus on credentials, tests and entrance exams. Long hours of studying and hard work are required. What they do is connected with their family and school. They must earn the high status by studying. They must get the good jobs by graduating the famous universities.Other activities are not permitted for some people who are preparing for important tests.

2. Why so much emphasis on education?

A place at the right university will mean a good job in the future. First the people lay out everyone’s CV on the floor, and then they put the CVs with the name of good universities on them to one side, while the CVs without good universities go straight into the bin. That’s why everyone wants to go to good universities. All this study and hard work has paid off for South Korea. From the destitution of the 1960s, it’s been transformed into a booming high tech industrial powerhouse that exports phones, cars and video games. Just over 10 years ago, South Korea joined the trillion dollar club of world economies. Now it’s the 12th largest.Education has played a huge role in the development of modern South Korea.South Korea has only people and no resources so education is the only way.

3. What are some of the negative aspects of this pressure on kids to perform/achieve?

Their lives are completely controlled by study. There are those that succeed and there are those that don’t.The lack of alternatives inSouth Korealeave those that don’t succeed with no other choice but to choose suicide. They do not feel like themselves. Most of their life is spent on studying. Some may not be able to deal with the pressure as well as others do. They may not have some required skills that other people overseas have. Eventually, those who get into businesses in other countries find that their jobs are easy and not fit for such high qualifications. Competing for the job is the only hard part. Once inside the company, everything becomes much easier. When the kids fail, they will feel disappointment and despair. The lifestyle of studying so much may be unhealthy.

4. Is education online the way of the future? What do you think about schooling being done completely at home on your computer?

Education should not be done in any digital form. Research has shown that (computers) andsmartphones do cause people to become ‘stupid’. Since the equipment itself does not support learning, concentrating for long periods of time facing screens will not have a positive effect on students. School will always exist and so will teachers. Not all people are suited to digital education. Online education will always be supplementary or utilised when there is no choice. The education system of schooling being done completely at home on your computer will face criticism. I think that there are many problems associated with using the computer to learn. This method of education is still in development stage and requires further advances in many fields. If new methods are proven to be useful and appropriate, they will catch on. If they do not work, they will die out. Usually, videos of teachers explaining various subjects are not as helpful as a real teacher in a real school. Curriculums differ between countries and so do teaching habits. We use the Acer Aspire V5 Series V5-473-54204G12tii (with the Toshiba Solid State Drive and Sanyo Suzhou Inbuilt Rechargeable Battery max. 8 hours). We do not usually use the laptop in mathematics and physical education classes. The laptops are used in almost every other lesson. It makes life much easier. However, total reliance on computers is not possible in the current age. Every few months new technologies, products and corrections are released. Computers are considered old as soon as they are used. The standards are becoming higher every day. Advances in these particular areas are not what we need. We require screens that don’t hurt the eyes. We want to feel good even after using the computer for more than one hour. Online education may be cheap but is not suitable to everyone.
