Conductors and Insulators

Conductors have little resistance, and electricity passes through it easily. The metal that has the least electric resistance is silver, followed by copper and gold. On the periodic table, the elements on the left side are better conductors than those on the right as they have fewer electrons in their valence shell.

Insulators have high electrical resistance and are poor conductors of electricity. Commonly used insulators include (thermosetting) most types of plastics, rubber, wood, glass and porcelain (including clay and quartz). Insulators hold onto their existing electrons or attract electrons thereby limiting the flow of electrons.

Conductivity of a material can change when factors change. The atomic qualities of the material, the length and amount of material as well as the temperature of the material will all affect conductivity.

1.      An electric current is a flow of electric charge involving the movement of electrons.

2.      aA conductor allows electrons to flow freely whereas an insulator limits it from doing so. bElectrical conductors include copper and aluminium. Insulators include rubber-like polymers and most plastics.

3.      aA path for electricity is called a circuit.

b A switch lets you open and close a circuit.

c The movement of electrons in a wire is calledan electric current.

d Substances which do not allow an electriccurrent to flow through them are called non-conductors.

e Metals are good conductors because they allow anelectric current to flow through them.

f The more current there is flowing around acircuit, the brighter a bulb glows.

g If the resistance in a circuit increases, thecurrent slows.

h A conductor has little resistance, while aninsulator has high resistance.
