Philosophy Report:Researching Adelaide housing styles.

The style of house that I live in is a Terrace House, according to the Adelaide House Styles Guide.The style of it is close to a Symmetrical Cottage, except that it has two floors and four main areas instead. It is also not of a very long construction, with the characteristic balcony existing only at the front. The balcony ‘wall’ is made with brick apart from one area, where it is a handmade wrought iron balcony. The ceilings are higher than most of the old classrooms of this school. The vents are high up for the air circulation. This reduces moisture and decreasesthe number of white ants & termites. Although this house has been up scaled, it is primarily Georgian due to its simple and formal style. It is also Mid Victorian Style, as terrace houses were popular in that period. ‘Terraced houses were springing up everywhere, containing parapets (for the balcony in my case) and detailed dividing walls between the property boundaries.’ This is according to ‘Australian residential architectural styles of Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia’. Tall windows/doors are another characteristic. There are an abundance of fireplaces. The floorboards creak underneath the carpet when walked on. Some rooms have corrugated iron roofs but most are covered with proper roofing.

Glenn Murcutt was born in 1936 in London. From the interview at Talking Heads, one can learn that he works mainly on his own, with his own style of work. The most important thing in life for him is simplicity.  His eye for nature was developed in PNG, and decided to become an architect partly due to his father’s teachings. His philosophy of “Touch the earth lightly” influences his design technique by making it clear to himself and others the importance of harmony with the surrounding area. It may also refer to building a ‘light’ structure which is beneficial to the environment in various ways. He considers ‘wind direction, water movement, temperature and light’ before designing. He uses ‘louvredglass, corrugated iron, stone, timber, concrete and steel’ most of the time. There is no need for air conditioning. Simpson-Lee House: Mount Wilson, Blue Mountains, New South Wales 1988-93. This house is more like a verandah, which is brought about by the perfect connection with the surrounding nature. The Arthur and Yvonne Boyd Art Centreis more large-scale, with beds (32) which are given great consideration. The public areas are well designed, and the scenery is always special. The surroundings include both cultivated farmland and natural bush.For his brother’s house, he used techniques such as: dark shaded walls, at night the house can be opened up to cool, and during the day it can be closed down. He says: ‘And you work this house and you work most of my buildings like you sail a yacht. You have to work them so that you understand how to get the best out of the climate without having to aircondition.’He is headstrong and determined. The PritzkerArchitecture Prize was the highlight of his career. His job as an architect created a considerable number of friendships.He had been the first to emphasize aspects of the current ‘eco-house’ qualities and characteristics, with his ‘Murcutt style’ buildings.

Troppo Architects are a group of people who work on projects locally. They use words such as Sense of Place, architecture that responds to climate and the local setting, adjustable skins, connect the indoors with the out, non-constant architecture that responds etc. They want to be logical and rational, but also a little informal, different, and original. The environment is important to them. They transport material/source materials closer to the site to reduce costs. They minimise wasted material and design houses for Australian/local conditions. They are committed to Environmentally Sustainable Development. Respond and think are their key words. Their passive thermal design for heating and cooling is sometimes supplemented by energy efficient mechanical systems. The outdoor area is also considered. Their selection of materials is performed with ten topics in mind. Less is More for them. Reduction in the amount of material in a building is key. Building is thought of as a verb, and not a noun or object. The Affordable Eco-Housing, Whitmore Square is very friendly to the surrounding public and is ecologically friendly too. It is a good example for others regarding the future of houses. The Foods for Life Parklet is apparently easy to transport from one place to another. The plants and seating can catch the attention of a passer-by and give them new ideas.This group collaborates with other architects such as Murcutt in their larger projects. This includes the park facilities of the Kakadu National Park. This was their greatest breakthrough which increased their popularity immensely. Many of their projects have received numerous Australian awards.

They were unable to receive funding, and so, on 18 August 1919, in a Model T Ford, they began an assignment from the Defence Department to check a different competition route.   My Workplace Reflection Using the results of your Employability Skills audit describe how one or more of your capabilities were developed through the work experience program. If possible, use specific examples that relate to each capability. My Literacy Capability was developed the most during the program. All the tasks that I performed required me to first fully understand the instructions. Working with, and serving customers was also a new experience and required me to understand their problems and keep them happy by suggesting alternative ways. Understanding the customer and talking to them in a friendly way was all that was expected of me at that stage.
