NHK fee collector is to Japan as Electricity meter reader is to Australia

 


Since Murakami’s writing did feature the annoying NHK collector, perhaps mine will feature the now near obsolete meter reading job. Ever since the virus, reluctance to let readers in to take photos of the meter – which we could easily do – has taken on greater meaning. The annoying part is that the dumb reader tends to knock on the wrong doors, and when the right door is explained, they don’t go to it. Or, they knock when you’re not ready to receive visitors, and by the time you have a mask ready, they’ve knocked twice and left. A professional reader knows which door to knock on, and the rest is up to whether I have prepared or the windows can be opened on that day or not…
