Sound Reality by Vaio...a shameless plug
July 2006
I just wanted to share my general delightedness with my new Vaio FE550G laptop with Sound Reality technology. From the early days I was a big fan of SACD and DSD technology, and now that it is apparent that most, if not all of my favorite recordings will never be available as Super Audio CDs--the fact that with Sound Reality I can convert my music collection into near-DSD quality computer files is all I could ask for in audio enjoyment. (Sound Reality Vaios feature soundcards that can play back audio at DSD's 2.82 MHz sampling rate). I also learned that Sony may also release a portable player that could play back these files.
It is possible to convert both WAV and mp3 files into the DSD format--although it goes without saying that to get the most benefit one would to start with a WAV file. However, I am listening to a converted VBR RealOne player 9 ripped mp3 at the moment--and the format does seem to do justice to it also. The WAV files do have more of a DSD-like richness to them...with perceived addition of space and depth...a finer sense of resolution also. I don't know if I am right about this, but my ears can seem to sense a finer, more delicate audio image befitting DSD--and I might even say a better quality than even my modded Sony SACD player--probably because the source is hard drive based and not optical disk based and subject to jitter and other artifacts. I'm listening to the Vaio through Sony MDR-710 headphones...which are a good fit; neutral and non grating. I might imagine that overly bright headphones might have a problem with DSD's extended frequency range, and I don't know what SigmaTel's soundcard does in terms of accentuation frequency-wise. With the 710s it sounds balanced and clean...although with the mp3s in question a little fatigue is noticable.
I just wanted to put in my vote for this new format(?) with the hope that unlike SACD is actually goes somewhere.Other: I have a Vaio and do not understand how this works. Does the wav file have to be changed to DSD or can the computer also convert on the fly for playback only? Also, how do I get the DSD format to my receiver? Does it use the 2 analog outputs on my card or can I use the optical or coax out?
