About you
What's your
background?
Tell us a
little about yourself.
Since Year
2 of Middle School in Japan I have been infatuated with the basic foundations
of modern life. The most typical one of them is the common plug and socket.
Obsessed with quality and near endless ideas of revitalising the business of
Izutsu Seisakusho Ltd. (headquartered in Kobe), I built up a site and went on
developing ideas for the global standards of electrical safety and universal
standard plugs but was unable to bring about any change, until now.
Today, I
have finished ‘Tinkering with ThinkPad keyboards’ (chiclet vs. traditional) –
it involved gathering the data of volunteers across 4 brands in 18 categories.
Since 2004, we’ve been desperately building up what we saw as the best 3D
virtual world ever – SAPARi, originally begun by Sony. Our team consists mainly
of former developers of the Community Place (VRML) platform. For years we’ve
been hacking away, ever-aware of the 3 Greats: SonicStage Mastering Studio/DSD
Direct, CP, XGStudio. We start by looking back. I say: ‘keep the good things
and create more of them’. It just seems that very few people do. They want new.
And things have only gone worse. What Blendo Development Team seeks to do is bring
about change from the fundamentals. And that means beginning from a safer plug
design suitable for the future smart homes. Something you’ll be able to plug
into sockets even in the dark.
Last year I
went through familiarising myself with the areas of research that Sony CSL
specialises in. I now have on top of a broad skill set comprising of daily
knowledge in utilities, biology through to the arts + the ability to efficiently
and actively carry out research. I have focused on developing my language
skills in English, Japanese, and especially my weaker Chinese. In March this
year I shared a basic health app that transcribes Chinese medical videos into
relevant text for the user to view in one touch. In May last year I began
independent development of a USB drive containing the codec CXD9872 of SonyLSI.
This was for enabling DSD recording on computers; today’s designs delegating
DSD file creation to separate hardware limits the ability of users to record
‘sound’. Digital backups of records is not the future of DSD. If proper
implementation occurs, A.Nishio ‘the father of DSD’ will see VR/streaming
utilising DSD technology. Every user will be able to access thinktanks,
communication, ecommerce etc with full ability to know what their hardware is
made of, control their nearest 5G tower hardware by vote…in essence, all users
will help make what they love and are passionate about come true; nobody will
‘belong’ to any one ‘company’, just as one person’s call to action for removing
fluoride from sawater won’t be missed due to people not being on that particular
site/forum.
To bring unprecedented change right from Matsushita’s founding project, the electrical wiring, which never ceased to bring about his passion/enthusiasm. I want only change for the better. We believe in electricity or in miracles?
pinwheel, goldfish, plug
37 (In
essence, I have had only) 3 trademark symbols. The pinwheel, the goldfish, and
the plug.
To protect
oneself and others, searching for some ‘justice/peace’. To (learn to) look
after others, as one would for a goldfish or any pet. To bring unprecedented
change right from Matsushita’s founding project, the wiring, which never ceased to bring about his passion/enthusiasm.
I want only change for the better. We believe in electricity or in miracles?
To bring
unprecedented change right from Matsushita’s founding project, the two way
socket and others – 配線器具 which never ceased to bring about his passion and enthusiasm – but only
change for the better. We believe in electricity or in miracles?

Describe
your professional status
If you are
employed, who is your employer? If you're not employed, tell us a little about
your situation (where do you work/study, etc).
I am
studying in Adelaide, Australia and have been studying in Sydney until 2013, in
Hiroshima until 2015. I attend a local high school while working on
communicating and ‘innovating’ with members of the old CP development team,
helping out elderly neighbours in the community, and working on my own
projects.

What would
your friends say makes you interesting? Visible during the Tournament
Ask them!
Fellow
friends say I am ‘interesting for being different’. Some have said ‘look at
him, he’s a legend.’ Others note that I share Ernest Hemingway’s birthday or
say that my accent doesn’t exist. Or that I keep copious notes of mostly dot
points regarding old and recent research findings as well as pros/cons lists
for a multitude of topics. In being able to summarise issues and natures of
things fundamentally and entirely despite the world being so large – perhaps
owing to wide readings e.g. Nietzsche, Zhuang Zi…credit to Icon Books and Tsai
Chih Chung! The way I use orange pencils and Signo 0.5 just to get that ‘Murakami-feel’…Obsessions
that burn me out – whether law through to blogging, I get through right to the
bottom of it and then move on. Others laughed at me for being a thorough
‘Panasonic Fan’ in 2015. Yes, in short a ‘young fool’. There’s nothing quite
like them.
But as for
what the friends do not see…I see much discontent in the world. Drivers passing
by on Kensington Rd swearing madly and loudly. Daily tragedies that need not
occur. Young generations entering the workforce but somehow still a mass of
discontent within. While some will employ the older generations for their wider
outlook and experience and greater understanding of their place in the world +
‘happiness’, we of the year 2000 need not resign to fate. What have the
businessmen and startups done at all to improve the world? On a winter night
with thick smoke stagnant along the footpath, I think, are we powerless? Are we
content just with food in our stomachs, keeping the world system running at a
satisfactory level,
maybe
employing technologies to try and make things a little easier…
But each technological development is so painstakingly difficult, particularly if it's mainstream medical technology. There is little need compared to mainstream entertainment or business needs. Useful technology is scarce. Whether it's starting a business, managing it, developing the products or services and possibly undertaking investments, what can be achieved with minimal resources still remains such things as education, writing, vlogging, coding, software based services, agriculture? The biggest hurdles can be overcome perhaps with 3D printing and prototyping. Soon it will be possible for all people to create what they need for their specific needs, without requiring research or investment funding or large tech companies. Medical lawyers and health technology/TCM agriculture are two areas of note.

Describe
something weird or unusual that you’ve built or done. Visible during the
Tournament
Unusually,
when I was little, dad helped me tape up pieces of paper and together we covered
the floors, the fusuma, the balcony for just one day. Those sheets were drawn
on beforehand with all sorts of drawings, including one of the entire Space
Battleship Yamato through to plain traintracks with black and brown rocks
dotted tightly together. Bits of them, and stickers, still remain on those ‘90s
cheap fusuma in Hiroshima…a little later on we experimented with round windows
to get this virtual feeling of being on a ship, or even of Destroyer Yukikaze.
Nothing spectacular like the house Jaron Lanier built though.

Who is
someone you personally know that will have an incredible impact on the world
one day?
Describe
how you know them & why you admire them.
Easy.
Matsuda Kouichi. Know him due to his involvement in the CP Project. Long-term
outstanding researcher and author/translator of many books. Admire his hard
work and effort, his style, and most of all that he didn’t get as much
recognition as some are in the VR group at UTokyo. As for ‘incredible impact’ –
plenty of researchers have done so but most have been humble and quiet about
it. Matsuda is pretty down-to-earth and exceptional.

Additional
questions
The
questions in this section are experimental and optional.
What is a
group or organization that you left or were kicked out of? Why?
Well, I
certainly hope not to ever be at the same spot Noah Glass found himself in for
twitter!

What books,
movies, or music do you like?
Movies –
all of them, especially from the 20th century. They had the perfect
balance of ‘content and skill’ which we don’t see now as the shifting of
emphasis has gone to VR and technical skill. Certainly did binge watch Japanese
films and dramas, and all the best legendary Chinese TV dramas too. Animation
is another field I love to think about.
Music –
classical, mostly, due to influence from my grandfather, but I listen widely
especially due to my prior mastering engineer experience and projects involving
DSD.

Who is a
public figure you think you’re most like? Why?
I am
original but my lifestyle looks similar to Murakami Haruki’s. And he’s no
public figure. Go figure.
280
characters leftWhat do you want to get out of Pioneer?
Nothing, except for a chance to clarify the path Blendo should take and focus upon for the rest of this year. I happen to find Pioneer a one of a kind spot and solution to develop something the current climate needs pressure to accept.

Your
project
What is
your project? Visible during the Tournament
Please
summarize your project in one sentence. Write as you would to a friend. The
summary should be comprehensible to anyone in the world, with no domain
expertise.
To consult
with all electrical standards authorities in the world, gather designs (that
follow a pre-specified criteria) drawn by ‘users of electricity’ and organise
them by country/region, perform something as close as can be to a ‘Earth-wide
vote’, and ultimately ensure that all people use the safest electrical wiring
products that can be used across the globe.

What's new
about this? Visible during the Tournament
The current
plug standards are extremely diverse. Most do not have earth pins. The UK plug,
touted as the safest possible plug doesn’t look like it’s accepted or favoured
by other countries which wish to retain their independence. Our old standards
have had no attempts at renewal since 40 years ago. As technology has improved,
now is the right time to begin a ‘global change’.

Why did you
decide to work on this? Visible during the Tournament
Electrical
wiring was the starting and finishing point for Matsushita Konosuke. For me it
is also the starting point to understanding the world, learning about
everything, and the gateway to a properly considered and built future. With
support from Izutsu and Clipsal, as well as pretty much all the electrical
wiring companies of Japan, we hope to bring about the next generation of
‘electricity magic’. Don’t forget, Matsushita Electric celebrates their
100-year anniversary this year. We have effectively begun a new page, only this
time we are in a modern world.

Project
details
What are
you going to make? How will it work? Why will it be useful? Please be as
descriptive as possible.
So we’ll be
making the simplest electrical product. The plug and the socket. I will release
the offical criteria (pending approval of the Clipsal and Izutsu) for designs
and an upload page for users to participate in the design process. I have made
plugs which vibrate very close to the frequency that SLR camera lenses do. This
will prevent build-up of excess dust around the pins and housing. The plug
‘pins’, if there needs to be any, will not be easily bent with pliers as the
current AU standards allow to happen. Misshapen sockets due to bent plugs being
used will not occur however this depends on what design is specified. In this
we are trying to prevent arcing currents. Switches will of course be
eliminated, and sparks will be minimised through the development and improvement
of Clipsal’s designs. Plugs and cords will not cause the user to contact lead
and other substances. During night hours the plugs will glow upon touching the
plastic body. There are simply too many ideas to list here.
Each viable
or necessary design idea must be kept to the utmost minimum. This is because we
have seen ‘multiplugs/sockets’, ‘glowing transparent adaptor plugs’, and ‘easy
release adaptor plugs’ all of which cannot find wide usage due to its resultant
lower safety. From there, discussions will take place as to what the final
design will incorporate. Clipsal Gepps Cross will manufacture prototypes and
the first products to be sold in the AU domestic market.
In another
country, Japan, Izutsu will manufacture prototypes of adaptors to ease the transition
to ‘smart plugs’ around the world but with sales starting in Australian and then
the Japanese markets. Once started, these plugs must spread to every corner. It
will need to be government and industry backed in both countries.
Other
meters to test certain electrical current issues are planned. Each ‘gadget’ and
wiring device will need to be specific to the region and its electrical issues.
They must be found widely in people’s homes and made for quality. In this we
rely on Tokyo KODEN’s technology.
Usefulness
is a matter of debate. For the sake of safety, convenience, and to kickstart
the next century of mankind’s bet on electricity, I believe the initial costs
of replacement and standardisation are very much necessary. This is further
remedied by the widespread use of adaptors for the first three years or so. I
have personally had a neighbour’s house burn down one night while they were on
holiday, while Adelaide’s China Town had a devastating fire originating from
faulty equipment. Those CAN be prevented. Things must go further than simply
reissuing the old plugs in a new outfit with often cheaper materials as
Panasonic tried to do in Japan.
